Durai Loves Pussy (LOL)

I was talking to my mother the other day when a normal conversation turned into somewhat like a national debate. It was a 2 versus 1 situation when my aunt joined in the debate supporting my mother. I knew it’s going to be tough because all the points they will be stressing will be related to thousands of years of Indians culture.

My friend brought his pet, a cute dog and tied it in front of my house before he went to play football. For the record, it was an expensive dog.Immediately I thought about a pet,why not? See, my family has this rare disease of anti-pets syndrome. Not like I’ve never had any pet since small, I did have a dog which got killed somehow due to my negligence, plus fish and hamsters. All of them died tragically in my hands. No, no, I’m not at all cruel to animals. See, all this happened like during my growing up years. Ariyathe vayase.

I do not have love for pets but then recently I’ve thought of taking up a pet. I was thinking about the easiest one to be taken care of thus I decided to buy something unusual to occupy my room. So I put forward the suggestion to my mother during my daily coffee-time-with-mother show.

What? No, no. I know how you will take care of pets. And tortoise, you cannot bring a tortoise inside the house, which will bring bad luck to our family. Maybe you can have fish or something.

Tensions of India. See, I could digest the fact that she is not allowing me to have pets because I might not be interested in taking care of it after a week or two. That’s very much understandable, but then recognizing a mere tortoise as a thing that brings bad luck is quite debatable.

I like talking about this.

It seems taking tortoise inside the house can bring bad luck and Hindu’s believe that tortoise and some other animals will actually bring ‘suey’. I’m again and again intrigued by our cultural belief that – says something downright farcical to cover up something bad that happens.

See, I would give you a couple of examples.

A butterfly accidentally flies inside your living room and decided to take rest. And I’ve seen like uncountable number of times this people from 70’s era saying that:

“There will be guest today”

What makes them believe so is like so unknown until now. Whenever they say such thing, I’ve seen like there will be no relatives or guest coming to my house for the next one month.

Next in the list is house lizard. It is believed that if you hear a lizard creaking while you’re talking to someone, that means the lizard is actually echoing your statement.

For an example, you might be telling your friends this:

“Durai ore vinah poneh maire da” …and you immediately hear a lizard creaking, (chit-chit-chit-chit). Believe it or not, that actually means the lizard is echoing your statement! Durai is really a vinah-poneh-maire!

Or that’s how our Indians believe. The real truth when a lizard creaks is they’re actually looking for fucks la! Lizard creaks when it is finding partner for mating. How on earth can you think that lizards understand Tamil?

I’m not at all accusing our ancestors for creating this kind of stories for no reason. They might have their own strong justification about each of these animal-fantasy stories. But I see no co-relation on why we need to practice all this today.

Back to Durai-loves-pet story.

Tortoise is considered such a taboo that my mother actually shook her head left and right in disagreement for at least 10 minutes. When asked the reason why, it seems tortoise brings bad luck.

I couldn’t help but to wonder why do I always see tortoise in rich Chinese people’s house and if they’re are striking bad all the time, would they be living in a bungalow? Heck, even inside Kek Lok Si temple in Penang there are thousands of tortoise inside the pond. Will a temple pet thousands of tortoises if it brings bad luck?

The same society which believes in tortoises bringing bad luck do not think:

1. Dog brings bad luck
2. Fish brings bad luck
3. Hamster brings bad luck
4. Bird brings bad luck

Heck, they do not even think pussy (cats) brings in bad luck. Thus, I could not perceive why tortoise (dan haiwan-haiwan yang berkaitan) is considered as bringing bad luck.

My dear Indian Makkals, it’s true that luck plays a part in our life. But that doesn’t mean we should entirely depend on it on how we lead our daily life. Blaming it on things around us when something bad happens should no longer be the case if we intend to be a rational society.

Just like how we should not be building temples for each tree on the roadside, we should not also be making out assertion for each animal noise we hear out there. This will indirectly eliminate ridiculous beliefs and put a stop to all this taboo-about-something in our society.

As I’ve always said, think logic, forget about magic.

By the way, I opted to go for a pussy instead.

:D

well bro, if it’s ur house, u can have a fuckin’ elephant for all u want…. LOL! But if it’s ur parents’ house, then you better keep that measly tortoise at least 500 metres away from the house… Else you’ll be 500 metres away… Then the bad luck prophecy will come true (for you, at least)

sometimes i dont know why they are so prone in believing all this nonsense. Last time I wanted to rear a baby phyton my parents HELL NO! so I decided to take up iguana, thats it. For a month i got bombarded for having that animal in my hse. You know how calm and relaxed a iguana can be.. but then due to much pressure, after 4th month i had to let go the fella. Luckily my friend took it. After that I bought a monkey a small one, but the fellow was too wild and i had to put him in cage. So i felt pity for him. After that had a dog, which eventually it turned into stray dog. it went fuccin around with the bitches and bite me once. so i sent the fellow to SPCA. Now i have been successfully rearing mosquitoes, about 200-300 of them :)

LOL @ rujjcoomarh, I guess you’re the one people should be asking what pets to rear! That’s quite a list by the way!

Bro Durai, my mum also hated the idea of me keeping a tortoise. I think its partially because of the smell.. :(

keeping fish is the best. but you’ve got to really maintain the aquarium, and have the correct combo of fishes that can live together.

The lizard thing is very common nowadays. Whatever shit we are saying, co-incidentally the lizard would be making its sound and thus it will be interpreted as a good sign/bad sign depending on what we are saying.

On the other hand, ponne janmathelle tortoise enna pavom pananggelo. Haihz…

I presume you are a beleiver of Shridi and I can assure you there is nothing bad in getting a tortoise. Infact if you read the Sai Vrat you will see that Swami has quoted that if you think of him he will protect you like the Mother of a Tortoise.

I would gladly give you and your mom a copy of the sai Vrat if you’d like.

    Allah Malik, Sai Ram.

@RM : Bro, I’ve done Sai Vrat and have been to Shirdi:) Thank you for your kindness:) Sai Ram
